Advice to Abishai

Dr. Johnny Pope was recently preaching for us and preached about how Abishai had been groomed by David and then saved David’s life by doing what David taught him and earning David’s trust. 2 Samuel 21:12-17

At lunch the day after he preached from this passage, I asked Dr. Johnny Pope what an Abishai (a young leader who desires to earn the trust of older leaders to have a greater platform of influence) can do to better serve our David’s (the men God has called us to serve).

Here is what he said…

  1. Follow David. Remember you work for Pastor, not the deacons or church.
  2. Find the needs and fill them. Abishai was the chief of the three (2 Samuel 23:18). He had shown great initiative.
  3. No surprises. Never allow your Pastor to get surprised by what you are doing.
  4. Be aware (beware) of people overly kind to you and deflect the least word of criticism towards pastor or the ministry. The spirit of Absalom says, “Oh that I were judge…” You may not have directly criticized but pointing out what you would have done differently is the same thing.
  5. Fight for your family. If you don’t minister to them, you do not have a ministry!
  6. Stay sword ready. Stay fresh in the Word of God and in your walk with God.
  7. Carry through with Pastor’s requests. Be sure to communicate well. This is huge! Be sure to explain any delays or obstacles preventing you from carrying out your Pastor’s requests.

I know I want to serve God’s man with diligence and was helped by this lesson. I pray it is a help to you as well.
